Myst V: End of Ages Hints
One of the passageways through the cliff is blocked off.
of 18: Yes, and you'll probably need to solve a puzzle to get through that passageway.
of 18: Specifically, you need to head up the cliff and see what you can find there.
of 18: When you get there, you should see a large hut surrounded by four smaller stations with symbols on them.
of 18: Those stations control the doors in the passageway below. You can click and drag the top of each of these stations to select a symbol -- you'll see a big line on the stationary part of the pedestal showing which symbol is currently selected.
of 18: But you're going to need to put together a couple of different sets of clues to figure out the correct combination of symbols.
of 18: Remember that the hut is basically a giant translator between the two numbering systems here -- the pictogram-type numbers that seem to be used by the Bahro, and the circles-and-lines format used inside the hut. (Neither one uses the numbers that look like boxed-in shapes, as found on Todelmer and in many of the other Myst games.)
of 18: If you read the clue at the bowls display correctly, you should have seen the circle-and-lines numbers of 4, 12, 2, and 9 (starting in the upper-left and going around clockwise).
of 18: You just need to figure out the four Bahro numbers that match those four circles-and-lines.
of 18: Review the translation at the hut that's shown in the following diagram if you need it.
of 18: You are looking for the symbols that look something like: 3 horizontal lines, a circle with a vertical stem sticking out (a lot like the symbol on the power button on many computers), 6 circles in a 3x2 grid, and 2 vertical lines with a horizontal line at the bottom. (These are also given in clockwise order.)
of 18: The order of the symbols is probably important -- you need to keep the same order going clockwise around the hut.
of 18: If you pay attention to which of the four symbols you need is on which of the four control stations, you'll find that there's only one possible orientation here.
of 18: Start with the station that's the second one to your right after you've climbed the cliff (as you're facing the hut). This is the only one of the stations that has the circle-and-stem (or power button) symbol on it, so rotate the top until that symbol is selected. Continue clockwise (to your left) to place the next three symbols in order.
of 18: The symbol with the 6 dots goes on the next station (the one just the right of the ladder). Then, the 2 vertical lines with a line at the bottom, and finally, the 3 horizontal lines.
of 18: If you've set these all correctly, you should be able to climb back down the cliff and go through the now-open door in the passageway. You should then proceed through three more doors as you continue down the passage until you reach Esher's laboratory. If any of the doors is closed, that means you got at least one symbol incorrect -- go back up and try the combination again.
