Myst V: End of Ages Hints

Esher tells me I need to enter through the jeweler door. How can I?

  • 1 of 18: When you first enter this age, you'll see a building called the trade house more or less in front of you.  Walk up the stairs there, and Esher will indicate that you can't enter through the front door, but that you can enter through the jeweler door on the other side.
  • 2 of 18: Way on the other side.  You probably want to explore a little first, and you'll certainly have to solve several other puzzles, before you can actually get to the door to solve this one.
  • 3 of 18: You should eventually find a canal, which will be blocked about halfway down.
  • 4 of 18: Further passage down the canal itself is blocked.  Your first task is getting to the end of the canal.
  • 5 of 18: If you've solved that puzzle and gone the full way down the canal, you should then end up in the arena.  Climb up the stairs at one end, where you'll find a stone column and a set of controls labeled with different numbers of concentric circles.
  • 6 of 18: After you've solved that puzzle, you should be able to ride the stone column up to the upper level of the arena.  If the pedestal doesn't take you up to that level (either you're up too high or not up high enough), then you haven't fully solved that puzzle, so go back and read the previous hints until you can stand on the pedestal and then walk off safely to another level in the arena.
  • 7 of 18: The jeweler door will then be to your right as you're facing into the stands.  You'll see a set of buttons with geometric symbols (hexagon, triangle, diamond, square, and circle) next to them.
  • 8 of 18: I bet pressing the buttons in the proper order would open the door.
  • 9 of 18: There's no logic or intuition involved here -- you just need to find the code within the game.
  • 10 of 18: Think about where you're trying to go.
  • 11 of 18: You're trying to get into the trade house where you first saw Esher.
  • 12 of 18: Why don't you head back to that front door near the main/starting pedestal for the age and see what you can see there?
  • 13 of 18: There are several open windows on either side of the door.
  • 14 of 18: Look through the leftmost window, and you'll see a slip of paper with those same symbols written on it.
  • 15 of 18: The symbols on the paper are diamond, hexagon, triangle, square, and circle.
  • 16 of 18: Only notice that the triangle is upside down compared to how it appears on the door.
  • 17 of 18: So flip what you see on the paper 180 degrees and see if that gives you the correct combination.
  • 18 of 18: It will.  Pushing the buttons in the following order will unlock the jeweler door -- circle, square, triangle, hexagon, diamond.  (Or the 5th, 4th, 2nd, 1st, and 3rd buttons from the left.)
