Myst V: End of Ages Hints

How do I get through the canal, which seems to be blocked just after I enter?

  • 1 of 23: You will be able to pass under the first set of triangular gates as you're coming from the beach, but you'll notice some metal bars blocking your way only a few steps after you've entered.  (If you haven't found the canal yet, the following hints will help.)
  • 2 of 23: But you are able to leave the canal another way.
  • 3 of 23: Turn to your left, where it appears the fence has fallen apart, and explore the area there.
  • 4 of 23: There appears to be some sort of machine that you can control here.
  • 5 of 23: And if you look above it, it looks like some kind of windmill.
  • 6 of 23: To power up the windmill and use any of its controls, you'll need to find a source of wind.
  • 7 of 23: Now go to the windmill while the wind is still blowing and experiment with the controls.  They need to be used in a particular order before they'll have any effect on anything at all.
  • 8 of 23: Start by pulling down the big lever on the far left of the control panel.  This is essentially the power switch for the console.
  • 9 of 23: Then try experimenting with the buttons and smaller levers.  You should be able to see the results of what they do as you look straight ahead towards the gates.
  • 10 of 23: You should notice that the gates seem to cross in the shape of an "X", and what you're controlling is in a small circle at the center of the X.
  • 11 of 23: The button on the left opens a pair of triangular gates that are to the left as you're looking at the main part of the pyramid.
  • 12 of 23: The left lever will raise or lower the central object -- from nearly submerged, to at eye level, to above you, and then back in the opposite direction.  So if you can't see the object, one press will always bring it to the right level -- either it's below you, so clicking raises it; or it's above you, and clicking lowers it.  (When I first played the game, it appeared that you also had to press the left button before the left lever would work.  It does take a second or two after you pull the lever down before it moves back up on its own, but the lever does move on its own eventually.  However, if the lever seems stuck, try pressing the left button to see if that helps.)
  • 13 of 23: The right lever will rotate the object by 90 degrees with each pull.  (The right button appears to do nothing.  Presumably, it at one pointed the gates that were already open when you first got here and are now stuck open.)
  • 14 of 23: Once you have the object at eye level, you may realize it's a pedestal for your slate.
  • 15 of 23: And there's a single opening in the central gate -- one and only one of the four quadrants of the "X" can be open at any time.
  • 16 of 23: So you can't just walk into the opening and out to the rest of the canal, but you can use the pedestal to enter the revolving section after it's positioned correctly.
  • 17 of 23: That, however, means getting the slate onto the pedestal.
  • 18 of 23: Once the slate is on the pedestal, you need to rotate the gate so that it's open to your right as you're walking down the canal.
  • 19 of 23: You need to create another sandstorm and press the right-hand button on the windmill control panel the appropriate number of times so the opening faces the second half of the canal.
  • 20 of 23: Exactly how many times you need to pull the right-hand lever will depend which way the pedestal was rotated previously.  It's probably either 1 pull (if you got a head-on view of the symbol on the pedestal from the canal) or 3 (if you put the slate on the pedestal yourself).  If necessary, you can always go back and use the windmill controls again to rotate the gate in position.
  • 21 of 23: Once the gate is in position, you can now proceed down the canal thanks to the pedestal.
  • 22 of 23: Go back to the start of the age, where you'll find the two-triangles symbol representing the pedestal in the gate.  Press it to teleport yourself there, and then walk through the opening (in front of you as you can see the symbol on the pedestal).  If the opening still isn't in the right position, you may need to teleport back out and try rotating the gate again.
  • 23 of 23: If you're stuck by another set of gates once you're past the pedestal, those are probably the gates controlled by the left-hand button.  Teleport back to the start of the gate, press the left-hand button -- you should be able to see the gates open this time -- and then telport one more time back to the pedestal in the pyramid.
