The Mystery of the Mummy Hints

How do I solve the tile puzzle in the downstairs study?

  • 1 of 10: Note Holmes' initial comment that he needs more tiles.
  • 2 of 10: You will need to find both black and white tiles to use to solve the puzzle.
  • 3 of 10: You'll also need to have a couple of bowls in your inventory before you can begin solving the puzzle.
  • 4 of 10: This puzzle is actually far simpler than it appears; however, it is time-consuming.
  • 5 of 10: The object is to create a black-and-white picture, by placing black and white tiles on the grid, in a manner defined by the numbers on the top and side axes.
  • 6 of 10: Numbers across the top axis refer to the columns beneath them; numbers on the left axis refer to the rows to the right of them.
  • 7 of 10: The numbers represent strings of contiguous black tiles.
  • 8 of 10: The number of white tiles is not divulged, but must be deduced.
  • 9 of 10: For example, the numbers 12-3-7 next to a horizontal row would indicate that -- somewhere in that row -- there is a string of 12 contiguous black tiles, then a break (i.e., at least one white tile), then a string of 3 contiguous black tiles, then a break, then a string of 7 contiguous black tiles.  There may, or may not, be white tiles before the first black tiles, or after the last black tiles.
  • 10 of 10: Solving the puzzle consists of placing tiles in the areas that are most probable, and working by process of elimination.
