Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy Hints

Easter Egg on the Castle Grounds

  • 1 of 9: This one is located in the garden, but the key to its location is located by the constellation stones.
  • 2 of 9: After you get the Ogham book from Donal, go to the constellation stones and zoom in on the main one, the one where you can see Taurus in the sky behind it.
  • 3 of 9: Now you basically need to try every possible combination on this stone. That is, turn the top stone four times; then turn the middle stone once and turn the top stone four times; then turn the middle stone once more, and so on until you've been through all the combinations. At some point in the proceedings, the stone plaque in the grass will open to reveal an odd piece of paper.
  • 4 of 9: You might recognize the shamrocks that were on the leprechauns in the garden. But what is this weird arrangement? Read to the end of this hint for the way to arrange the gnomes.
  • 5 of 9: The arrangement might be familiar to you as well, depending on how many math classes you've taken. Try re-writing the puzzle with A, B, C, and so on in place of the different shamrock patterns, then solving the formulae to find out what number goes with each one. Here they are, in case the math baffles you (the way it did me):
  • 6 of 9: You'll find, to your surprise, that several of them have the same answer. In fact, all of them translate to one of four numbers: 3, 6, 9, or 12. What do those numbers suggest?
  • 7 of 9: They all refer to points on a clock face -- 3 o'clock, or facing right; 6 o'clock, facing down; 9 o'clock, facing left; and 12 o'clock, facing up.
  • 8 of 9: Now that you know that, it's relatively simple to go to the garden and match the shamrocks to the gnomes, then turn them the way the formulae indicate. Here's the final arrangement you need:
  • 9 of 9: From left to right, the gnomes should face down, left, down, right, up, left, up. This makes the crow's nest appear again, this time with your egg sitting there smiling at you.
