Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy Hints
What am I doing with the gnomes in the garden?
of 15: To find the garden, go left from the castle door until you run into a square wall. The entrance is along the bottom edge of the square, and the gnomes (or leprechauns) are at the back of the garden. Read to the end of this hint for the way to turn the gnomes -- but it won't work until you've found the solution in the game.
of 15: If you mess around with the gnomes, you'll discover that they can be turned so they face different directions. That's helpful to know, but until you know what way to turn them, you're still stuck.
of 15: You'll get the clue that helps you solve this puzzle after you print the programs for Kyler.
of 15: When that's done, Kyler gives you Alan Paine's phone number. Go down to the Screaming Banshee Inn and call him, then come talk to Kit about the things Alan just told you.
of 15: Kit clearly doesn't want to talk about the things Alan said, since instead of telling you what you want to know he first makes you do the seating chart for the reception --
of 15: -- and then when that's done, he shoves a book in your face and then pretends like you're not there. But that's okay, since that book will tell you how to solve the gnomes. (You'll need to talk to Kit again to get him to finally answer your original question.)
of 15: At first glance, the book ("Brehon Law") seems to be something between poetry and saga, with a bit of nonsense thrown in. But that's only when you look at the words.
of 15: Instead, look at the pictures and the initial letters of each sentence.
of 15: All the large letters are the same: F, B, R, L. That could be forward, back, right, and left. And there are exactly seven of them, just like the gnomes. Aha!
of 15: But there's more. In front of each letter is a shamrock, and they're all slightly different -- one has a dark leaf on the left, one on the right, and so on.
of 15: So take the book and go back to the gnomes, and this time look closely at them. See the little shamrock painted on the belly of every gnome?
of 15: Now all you have to do is match the shamrock in the book to the shamrock on the gnome, and turn that gnome in that direction. For example, the first gnome has a shamrock with a dark leaf on the right. In the book, that shamrock adorns a sentence that starts with an R. So turn the first gnome till he faces to the right.
of 15: Here is how all the gnomes should be turned -- but remember, this won't work until Kit has given you the book and you've looked in it at least once:
of 15: From left to right, the leprechauns face Right, Left, Back, Forward, Right, Back, Forward.
of 15: When the gnomes are all turned the right way, a door in the garden wall pops open to reveal the crow's nest, full of things he's snatched out of the nursery.
