Neverwinter Nights 2 Hints
What's the best way to start off?
of 17: Following is a step-by-step guide to how I think players should start managing their keep.
of 17: When you first get there at the beginning of Act II, Part 3, have your starter conversation with Master Veedle and Kana near the keep, then get Veedle to fix up the smithy shop.
of 17: Talk to Wolf near the keep entrance and have him take you to the path outside in order to get to the keep's world map transition point.
of 17: Get Casavir in your party, then travel to the Old Owl Well and recruit Katriona and Pentin.
of 17: Return to the keep and have Wolf's handy minion take you to the courtyard, where you can use the procedure outlined in the Misc. Notes to get Jacoby and Edario to buy stuff from you for as much money as possible. However, don't sell anything to them yet.
of 17: Instead, go into the keep and repeat that process with Uncus to see if you can get him to give you higher prices than you got with the two outdoor guys. If so, remember to sell him anything that he offers less than 15,000 for, plus anything that he offers 15,000 for but that Jacoby and Edario offer less than 15,000 for.
of 17: Talk to Kana and have her assign Katriona to training, then tell her to train and garrison the men. Also, have her start a light tithe on the merchants and put no tithe on the farmers. (You can't get much money from tithes at this point of the game, and you don't want to scare people off with high tithes.)
of 17: Go down to the basement and talk to Kistrel and tell him he can stay, thereby getting started on his little side deal.
of 17: Now go sell all of the items you've been saving up to sell to whichever one of the above merchants is giving you the best prices for that. Hopefully, you've got a lot of old stuff that you can turn into cash now. (If you've *really* been saving up stuff, you should be able to exhaust the 300,000-gold money supply of two of those merchants.)
of 17: Your first priority for all that new money will not be keep upgrades, but whatever super-expensive magic items you've had your eye on but couldn't afford so far. (The Ring of Regeneration that Nya in Port Llast sells is just one of many fine examples.)
of 17: When you get back from your buying trip, go talk to either Calindra or Pentin in the farms area and tell them to go mine all the ore you've found so far.
of 17: Go to the courtyard and buy the basic Graycloak armor and weapon upgrades from Edario and Jacoby, then return to the farms and talk to the miners to get your free ingot samples.
of 17: Go buy the second weapon and armor upgrades from Edario and Jacoby, then have Master Veedle build the merchant shop.
of 17: Go into the keep and tell Kana the same thing you told her before about Katriona's assignment and the training, then go down to the basement and check on Kistrel to learn that he's making you a cloak.
of 17: Leave the keep and go recruit Deekin, then visit the keep's merchant shop and play the "best price" game with him like you did with the other three merchants earlier. (But take note of the bug warning that he'll stop offering store services after you talk to him a couple of times. You might want to wait to talk to him until you're ready to sell him 300,000-gold's worth of items and buy whatever you want that he has.)
of 17: And there you have it: your "best start" for fixing up your keep. You should upgrade your Graycloaks' equipment some more if you can afford to, then go back and forth between Master Veedle and Kana, buying whatever upgrades you can and getting your men recruited, trained, and out on patrol. (Also, you can get Torio Claven added in, plus send a goofy adventuring party off on two missions.)
