The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Umbra Combat Tips
of 11: First of all, don't walk up to her and initiate conversation. Instead, sneak to where you can hit her with a powerful spell or sneak attack to start things off with.
of 11: Then keep hitting her with your most powerful weapon, like Goldbrand from Boethia's quest, or something like that.
of 11: It would help a lot to paralyze her with your initial attack via a Paralyze spell or the Volendrung weapon from Malacath's quest. She doesn't have any magic resistance or reflect capabilities -- just a Restore Health 2 points per second effect.
of 11: Starting off with a Volendrung attack and then quickly switching to Goldbrand for some heavy damage-dealing can work. It's just too bad that Volendrung's Paralyze effect is so extremely short. After Umbra gets back up, you'll have to try to dodge her until you can switch back to Volendrung and hit her with it again.
of 11: Instead of Volendrung, you could use the magic power gained from the Serpent Stone to paralyze and partly damage Umbra, but you could only use it once.
of 11: It would also be great if you could have a constant 100% Chameleon effect on you. This is hard though possible to achieve using one of my Enchanting Tips.
of 11: It also works really well to use Vaermina's Skull of Corruption on Umbra to create a corrupted clone for her to fight while you attack her from behind with Goldbrand. She may even say something like "I'm on your side" while you hack on her! (Just make sure you're attacking the original and not the clone.)
of 11: If you're acrobatic enough, you can jump onto the white stone slab near Umbra and from there onto one of the nearby pillars. From up there, you can attack Umbra from safety with spells and arrows, but you'll have to be able to deal damage out quickly that way in order to eventually kill her.
of 11: One of the best strategies, which can work very well for even level 1 characters, involves using the Akavari Sunderblade. (You can't get the shrine quest if you're level 1, but you can get and use the Umbra sword and armor.)
of 11: If you have the "Mehrunes' Razor" DLC module installed, you can go get the razor and use it against Umbra. This is another strategy that can work well for level 1 characters, and it's less trouble and expense than the above sunderblade strategy. (Unless you count the fact that getting the razor is a lot of trouble.)
of 11: When she dies, ignore the bogus message you may get about there being no soul gem in your inventory large enough to capture the soul. (The message is presumably meant for her, since she was the one with the soul-trapping weapon.)
