The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Get the Umbra Sword and Azura's Star

  • 1 of 9: When you get back to the Market District, go buy the Akavari Sunderblade for sure, and Apotheosis if you can afford it, too. Those are *extremely* powerful weapons in the hands of low-level characters.
  • 2 of 9: NOTE: You might also want to look ahead at the "Get Brother Martin to Join Up" step and consider doing it now, even though it would be pretty hard to accomplish.
  • 3 of 9: Before you go for Umbra, you'll need a good paralysis power. If you chose the Lover as your birthsign, you're set. Otherwise, make a quick trip out to the Serpent Stone and get its power.
  • 4 of 9: Also, go get the Fin Gleam helm if you haven't already. It'll be very useful in helping you see in dark dungeons, including the one Umbra's in.
  • 5 of 9: When you're ready, see the hints for Clavicus Vile's Daedric Shrine Quest, keeping in mind that you don't actually need to visit Vile's shrine or Pell's Gate, and that you're going to use the sunderblade strategy on Umbra.
  • 6 of 9: Once you have that great set of Umbra armor, you can wear it while using the Fun With Guards tips in order to be well-protected. Note that since you've already joined the Mages Guild, you can go to the Arcane University's tower lobby area to find a couple of unkillable quest people who'll attack the guards for you.
  • 7 of 9: Be sure to repair your equipment and the guards' after every fight so you can get your Armorer skill up high enough to repair the Umbra sword. Or train some more with Rohssan if you've got the money. (Or use the Amulet of Disintegration if you got it from the Shivering Isles region.)
  • 8 of 9: After you accomplish that, it'll be time to do Azura's Daedric Shrine Quest so that you'll have a reusable grand soul gem for use with Umbra. See the Combat Tips if you don't know why the combination of Umbra and Azura's Star is so great.
  • 9 of 9: NOTE: You'll probably catch the vampire disease during Azura's quest. I advise you to keep it and let it transform you into a vampire, since it's fairly easy to play through the rest of the game that way, and you get several cool benefits. See the Vampirism hints if you want to know more about it.
