The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Weapon Skills

  • 1 of 8: The easiest way to practice Blade, Blunt, Marksman, and Hand to Hand is to have a cheap, non-magical weapon of the appropriate type equipped (or no weapon in the case of Hand to Hand) and repeatedly attack an unkillable, quest-related person who won't fight back.
  • 2 of 8: If you have a complete set of Chameleon Clothing on (see the Enchanting Tips), no enemy will be able to see or attack you, and you can easily practice on anyone instead of having to seek out one of the above-mentioned unkillables.
  • 3 of 8: If you have to practice on enemies who will fight back, be sure you can survive their attacks by having a high AC and some good healing spells and/or potions. On higher difficulty settings, you'll also need to have fairly high Reflect Damage and Resist Magic effects (see the Constant Effect Item Lists).
  • 4 of 8: Try to practice on enemies who are tough enough to last awhile, and who don't do a whole lot of blocking, since that can really slow down your rate of attack.
  • 5 of 8: If an enemy you want to practice on has a weapon that damages you too quickly, use something like the Akavari Sunderblade to break his weapon so that he'll have to rely on his fists, which will probably be much less damaging.
  • 6 of 8: It's a lot safer to practice on summoned creatures. They don't turn hostile until you hit them three times, and you can recast the summoning spell (or cast a different one) to get rid of them when you need to stop and heal up. See the Spell Finding list if you want to know where all you can buy creature-summoning spells.
  • 7 of 8: Since there's no such thing in the game as an unlimited-ammo bow, you'll have to buy or otherwise obtain lots of arrows if you want to practice Marksman a lot.
  • 8 of 8: One trick is to practice on summoned skeletons, since arrows bounce off of them, allowing you to reclaim them. (As long as both the bow and the arrows are non-magical, that is.)
