The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Armor Skills
of 10: The only way to practice the Light Armor and Heavy Armor skills is to wear armor of the appropriate type and let a hostile NPC or creature beat up on you.
of 10: To be sure you can survive all the hits you'll be taking, keep the armor you're wearing in top shape (see the Armorer skill tips a bit further down) and use Shield potions or spells.
of 10: On higher difficulty settings, you'll also need to have fairly high Reflect Damage and Resist Magic effects (see the Constant Effect Item Lists). Just make sure your Reflect Damage percentage is less than 100, or your armor skills won't go up at all. Temporarily unequip one of your Reflect Damage items if you need to.
of 10: When an enemy you want to practice with has a weapon that damages you too quickly, use something like the Akavari Sunderblade to break his weapon so that he'll have to rely on his fists, which will probably be much less damaging.
of 10: It's a lot safer to practice on summoned creatures. Hit them three times to turn them hostile, then stand and let them attack you. You can recast the summoning spell (or cast a different one) to get rid of them when you need to stop and heal up. See the Spell Finding list if you want to know where all you can buy creature-summoning spells.
of 10: You practice the Block skill the same way you practice the armor skills, except that you stand in Block mode, preferably with a shield equipped. (Note that a 100% or more Reflect Damage won't stop your Block skill from going up, so use it if you've got it.)
of 10: To practice Armorer, buy hammers from shopkeepers and/or find them in crates so you can use them to repair your armor after every practice session.
of 10: Once you gain access to a spellmaking altar (see below), make a Disintegrate Armor spell that you can cast on yourself to damage your armor a little bit. Cast the spell a few times, use hammers to repair what it damaged, and so on.
of 10: If you have the Shivering Isles expansion installed, the ultimate way to practice Armorer is to get the Amulet of Disintegration and use it. See the misc. quest called "The Coming Storm" in the separate UHS hint file "The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles."
of 10: Or if you do the Imperial City misc. quest "Secrets of the Ayleids" using the Crown of Lindai option, you may be able to practice your Armorer skill endlessly on the broken crown. This has worked even with the latest patch, though it doesn't always, so don't depend on it.
