The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
What all creatures can I get grand-level souls from?
of 10: Only creatures that are level 18 or greater will give grand souls when you soul-trap them.
of 10: Checking with the game's construction set program, you'll see that includes high-powered enemies like goblin warlords, minotaur lords, xivilai, liches, etc.
of 10: A few of those can be summoned with Conjuration spells, specifically the lich, gloom wraith, xivilai, dremora, and dremora lord creatures. The cheapest of those to summon is the dremora, but even that requires a Conjuration skill of 50.
of 10: NOTE: To capture any kind of dremora's soul, you'll need a black soul gem since they're counted as NPCs.
of 10: Also, many creatures' exact level depends on your own, so they may give grand souls if you're high-level enough to make them be level 18 or higher when you encounter them.
of 10: What it comes down to is this: you can only get lots of grand-level souls to capture once your character is very advanced and high-level.
of 10: However, there are some shortcuts available that you can use to get a few grand-level souls for enchanting earlier in the game.
of 10: There are two grand soul gems with grand souls already trapped in them in the display case in the tower lobby at the Imperial City's Arcane University. You can even take them legally if you're a Mages Guild member, though you'll have to sneak while picking the case's lock. (See the Lockpicking Tips if you have trouble with the lock.)
of 10: Also, if you get ahold of some empty grand soul gems and have no way of filling them with grand-level souls, you can transform them into black soul gems and then kill and soul-trap nonessential NPCs to get grand-level souls. (It's best to soul-trap evil types, like necromancers, bandits, marauders, etc.)
of 10: If the item duplication glitches described in the Useful Glitches haven't been fixed in the version of the game you're playing, you can use them to transform one filled grand or black soul gem into many.
