The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Enchanting Tips
of 11: In order to enchant items, you'll have to gain access to an enchanting altar.
of 11: What effects you can put on an item depend on what spell types you know (from spells, powers, and birthsign effects that you have), what spell types are allowed for enchanting that type of item, and whether or not your related magic skills are high enough.
of 11: The Spell Finding list's "Usage" column shows how each spell type can be used in enchanting, and its "Req. Skill" column shows what skill level you need in order to use the cheapest available spell(s) of that type.
of 11: When you enchant a weapon, it's always with an effect that will be cast on what you're attacking every time you strike. When you enchant clothing, armor, or jewelry, it'll automatically be a constant-effect enchantment that's applied to you whenever you wear the item.
of 11: The game allows some really dumb enchantments, like a weapon that fortifies an enemy's attributes whenever you strike him or a piece of jewelry that causes you constant fire damage when worn. Don't waste your time and captured souls with stuff like that unless you're making valuable stolen items into legit ones to sell (see the Stealing Tips).
of 11: When you've decided on a good effect to put on an item, be sure you have a filled soul gem to do the enchanting with. The more powerful the soul you're using, the more powerful the enchantment will be (except with Night-Eye, Water Walking, and Water Breathing).
of 11: See the Combat Tips to learn of a way to get a soul-trapping weapon and use it to capture lots of souls.
of 11: Grand soul gems are the best kind, and can hold the strongest types of souls.
of 11: By far the most useful thing you can do with enchanting is to make yourself a set of "Chameleon Clothing" that'll get your Chameleon effect up to or over 100% when worn. There are also a few other useful enchantments that you might want to make eventually.
