Sentinel: Descendants in Time Hints
What is the purpose of the posts and cranks inside the church?
of 32: As you may have already discovered, there are quite a few puzzles in "Sentinel" that are sound-related. And, in fact, most of the puzzles here in Argannas share that characteristic.
of 32: The posts with the cranks on them, found in the church, are part of one of the sound puzzles that you will encounter in Argannas.
of 32: This puzzle is randomly generated each time you play a new game, so there is no single solution. The following hints provide information on the process of solving the puzzle, regardless of the final solution.
of 32: Experiment with all of the cranks that you can find.
of 32: How many did you locate?
of 32: You should find that there are six posts that have cranks set into them.
of 32: What can you find that distinguishes one post from another?
of 32: Look carefully at the posts, play with the cranks, and see how many different things you can discover.
of 32: The most obvious should be the sounds that are generated when any one of the cranks is turned.
of 32: Try to identify the various sounds that are created -- perhaps by associating them with what they sound like (e.g., a small ratchet, a gear turning in a hollow box, a squeaky wheel, etc.)
of 32: Are all of the sounds different?
of 32: They are not -- some are different, some are similar.
of 32: In more than one situation in Argannas, a sound puzzle requires you to identify similar sounds, while discarding the ones that are clearly different.
of 32: In this case, see if you can eliminate the cranks that produce their own unique sound, and focus on the ones that produce similar sounds.
of 32: (If you are distracted by the music in the background, you may wish to return to the Settings menu, and go to the settings for Sound, and turn off the music.)
of 32: What else is fairly obvious on each of the posts that contain a crank?
of 32: You should find symbols -- glyphs -- on metal plates on each of the posts.
of 32: Make a note of those glyphs; have you seen anything similar anywhere else yet?
of 32: Be sure that you've explored around the area of Argannas to which you currently have access, looking for something that might match those symbols.
of 32: The glyphs are some of the ones that appear on the 3x3 gold plates that can be found in several places in Argannas.
of 32: Which glyphs are associated with the three similar-sounding cranks?
of 32: You may wish to jot down the glyphs that you find on the three posts whose cranks produce matching sounds.
of 32: These three glyphs will match three of the symbols on one of the 3x3 grids of golden buttons located somewhere nearby.
of 32: However, you will need one more piece of information to go along with the three symbols.
of 32: Since the symbols provide the clues to buttons that need to be pressed on another puzzle, you will also need to know the order in which place the symbols -- i.e., the order in which to press the matching buttons.
of 32: (Note that some symbols may be "mirror images" of what you actually find on the "golden puzzle grid". That is valid.)
