How do I open the six gates at the start of the level?
1 of 8: There's no way to open the gate that shuts behind you when you first enter the level. You need to concentrate on opening the gates that are ahead of you as you're entering (on the north side of the level).
2 of 8: The hieroglyphs due north of the entrance, behind the two bulls, are the key to opening the gates.
3 of 8: If you head west from those hieroglyphs, you will find a "Scrap of Paper" that shows you how to translate the hieroglyphs into English. In theory, this may help you solve this puzzle, although I personally found the solution to be a bit silly.
4 of 8: Start by realizing that you can push the hieroglyphs -- push each one once to open one of the six gates. From there, you need to go through the gate, let it close behind you, and find a way to re-open the gate from the other side before you can push another combination of hieroglyphs.
5 of 8: If you push the wrong combination, you'll open the northeastern gate, into an area with nothing but traps.
6 of 8: You can find the right combination by assuming that hieroglyphs are ordered the same way that English letters are. From left to right, the symbols represent the letters I, Q, and A.
7 of 8: Press the right, left, and middle buttons in that order (the symbols translating to "AIQ"). This will open the gate to the far west.
8 of 8: Once you've explored the area beyond that gate, you should have four other combinations of hieroglyphs. Use those combinations to open all of the other gates.
