Voyage Hints

How can I find the code for the two water control panels?

  • 1 of 25: The two water control panels are similar, although the ideograms on their buttons are different.
  • 2 of 25: And one of the panels seems to have had several of its button ideograms erased, for some reason!  So it is impossible to know what they originally were.
  • 3 of 25: The clue (for both) comes from one of the Selenite aliens.
  • 4 of 25: Have you talked with Scurvy, the Insomniac -- the alien shepherd of the exile Selenites?
  • 5 of 25: Scurvy lives on Level 3 in the underground caverns, at position "12".
  • 6 of 25: It is a good idea to talk to him about every possible topic of discussion that is available to you.  He will provide hints for several of the puzzles in the game.
  • 7 of 25: Fortunately, Scurvy's most important points will also be entered into Ardan's log, for future reference.
  • 8 of 25: If you follow the pipes behind the two water control panels, you will see that they eventually lead underground, and to the large pipe organ.
  • 9 of 25: It is this pipe organ that can be used to call the exile aliens from their various locations, says Scurvy.
  • 10 of 25: But before the organ can be used, it has to be supplied with water, using these water control panels.
  • 11 of 25: And the key, according to the shepherd of the exiles, is that "you press once per line and once per column on the ideogram representing the liquid element..."
  • 12 of 25: What is the "ideogram representing the liquid element"?
  • 13 of 25: That would be water -- the two wavy lines.
  • 14 of 25: Each panel accepts only a four-button code.
  • 15 of 25: But at least one of the panels has more than four "water" ideograms.  How can you know which four to press?
  • 16 of 25: That's in the first part of Scurvy's clue.  The four buttons must be "once per line and once per column".
  • 17 of 25: In other words, no two buttons can be in the same row, or the same column; all must be unique.
  • 18 of 25: Start with the panel that has all 16 ideograms clearly marked.
  • 19 of 25: When the correct keys are pressed (in any order, as long as all four are pressed during one "cycle of four"), a small panel cover will open, revealing another valve.
  • 20 of 25: However, this valve is different than the others you may have seen.
  • 21 of 25: This valve has three positions, not two.
  • 22 of 25: It can be turned to the left, to the right, or vertical.
  • 23 of 25: The vertical position is "off".
  • 24 of 25: Turning the valve to the left or right causes a comment from Ardan, denoting which direction the water is flowing.
  • 25 of 25: To get water to the organ pipes, you will need to make sure that the water is flowing *from* the pond, back into the underground caverns.  (It cannot be flowing toward the other panel with the 6 square buttons containing Selenite numbers).
