Voyage Hints
What is the machine against the left wall?
of 13: It is called a harmonic educator. It can help train someone in learning the various Selenite sounds.
of 13: You may experiment with the harmonic educator at any time.
of 13: Go to a close-up view, and note everything that is active on the screen.
of 13: There are two similar-looking panels of 16 buttons each, arrayed in 4 rows and 4 columns each.
of 13: The buttons on the right side all have known ideograms associated with them.
of 13: However, the buttons on the left side are not identified.
of 13: Play with the buttons to see what happens. (Note: this is a sound-based puzzle. You will need to have your speakers turned up, and all other distracting sounds reduced. If you are hearing-impaired, this will be a difficult -- if not impossible -- puzzle for you to solve. See if you can find someone to help you -- preferably someone with a good ear for music.)
of 13: All 32 of the buttons can be pressed. And each time you press a button, a sound is produced. Each of the 16 buttons within one of the two sides produces a unique sound.
of 13: The object of the harmonic educator is to locate the "pairs" of sounds between the two sides. That is, the same 16 sounds can be produced by both 4x4 grids of buttons. You need to find the "matches" for all 16 pairs of buttons.
of 13: Every time you use the harmonic educator, the 16 buttons on the right-hand side produce the exact same tones, in the same order.
of 13: However, the 16 buttons on the left side -- while producing the same 16 tones -- randomize the position of the 16 tones every time you restart the harmonic educator.
of 13: Restarting can consist of approaching the puzzle for the first time, backing away from an existing puzzle and re-entering it, or playing through an entire "test" of the harmonic educator, and then doing it again. In each of these cases, the 16 tones on the left side will be rearranged into different locations.
