Voyage Hints
How do I solve this puzzle?
of 8: The bad news is that it isn't going to be easy. The good news is that, if this is your FIRST time working with the harmonic educator, the puzzle "goes easy" on you.
of 8: As long as you have not yet solved the harmonic educator (and this is indicated by only the first blue light bar being lit), you can make as many mistakes as you like, and the puzzle will continue. (After that, trying another time will institute an "error counter", and limit your number of tries. See What are the blue light bars at the bottom for? for more information.)
of 8: So one approach -- for this first time through -- is to press a button on the left, and then try the first button on the right. If it matches, you found a pair, and you can continue to the next button on the left.
of 8: If the two do not match, press the same button on the left side, then the second button on the right. If they do not match, go back to the same button on the left, and try the third button on the right.
of 8: You can continue this back-and-forth until you have discovered all pairs. (Remember that any button that has already been successfully identified as part of a pair will be disabled, so you no longer need to check those.)
of 8: In fact, you can even shorten the above example by starting with one button on the left, then go to the right panel, and -- for as long as you think you can "remember" the sound that was generated by the left button -- keep pressing all of the buttons on the right until you find a match. (You may need to stop after a few, and re-press the button on the left again, to refresh your "musical memory".)
of 8: Once you think you have identified the correct button on the right (assuming that it was not the first one pressed, immediately after pressing the button on the left panel), the machine will still not recognize it as a "match" until you go back and re-press the button on the left panel, and then press the matching button on the right panel once again.
of 8: This should get you through the puzzle the first time. If you do choose to try it again (for a higher score), and the "error counter" has now been enabled, you will have a much more difficult time of it. You can no longer use any of the above techniques, as you will exceed the allowable number of errors long before you solve the puzzle. These additional levels -- which, by the way, are *not* needed to continue with the game, but only to raise your point total -- will require a good ear for music, and possibly either another player to help, or a keyboard nearby.
