Wizardry 8 Hints

Can I work for both the Umpani and the T'rang?

  • 1 of 5: As you adventure through Wizardry 8, you will come to realize that your party is not the only group seeking the keys to Ascension. Two powerful intergalactic species, the T'rang and the Umpani, have been drawn to Dominus and have set up headquarters in remote sections of the planet. These two factions are bitter rivals, and both may try to enlist your party's aid in their dispute.

The short answer is, yes, you may work for both the Umpani and the T'rang at the same time, but this may change your game in some ways. The rest of these hints contain spoilers on how to do this successfully.
  • 2 of 5: You party is free to join up with either the T'rang or the Umpani, or even to work as double agents for both sides. Given that the T'rang and Umpani have established their bases at opposite ends of the planet, it is very difficult for either to know what the other is up to. However, playing the double agent does carry a risk of being uncovered as a traitor. There are some things you can do to minimize this risk.
  • 3 of 5: Make sure you speak with He'Li in Arnika immediately after joining both factions. Rumors pass freely in the tavern, and she'll soon discover what you're up to. Paying her to keep her mouth shut is a wise investment in your party's safety.
  • 4 of 5: Later on in the game, you will discover that there is a T'rang spy located in the Umpani camp. Should he observe your party fraternising with the Umpani, he's sure to report it to his leader. While you may be given the opportunity to turn this spy over to the Umpani authorities, it is questionable what effect this will have on your relationship with the two factions.

Regardless, the presence of the spy means that no matter how careful you are, there is always a chance that the T'rang will discover your deceit. On the flip side, since the Umpani have no spy among the T'rang, you are perfectly safe from them ever finding you out.
  • 5 of 5: Eventually, after you have completed enough quests for either side, you will be given an assignment to attack the other side directly through sabotage. At this point, you have to make a decision: either carry out this final mission and reveal yourself to the enemy, or refuse the mission and continue to work in secrecy. If you choose to complete the mission, your relationship with the opposing faction will be ruined. Ignoring your mission may lead to a chance of negotiating peace between the two sides. It's up to you, and has no effect on the outcome of the game.
