Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods Hints

Character Development Tips

  • 1 of 10: As in the main Gothic 3 game, I advise building a powerful mage character, despite the fact that doing so will make early-game combats more difficult (especially on the highest difficulty setting). It's actually a fighter/mage build, but the emphasis on early learning point usage is entirely on the mage aspect.
  • 2 of 10: After starting a new game, visit and loot all the towns like the Starting Tips say to. The most important equipment to get on your early raids is the paladin armor and royal shield from Vengard, the Ring of Adanos from Reddock, and an ordinary sword from random loot. (See the Special Free Equipment List.) Equip those plus any headgear item (they all have the same bonus on them) to make your character tough enough to handle early combats fighter-style.
  • 3 of 10: Also, get all 95 of the available Ancient Knowledge points from stone tablets and bookshelves. (See the Ancient Knowledge Trainer List.) That'll get your Ancient Knowledge up to 105, which is more than enough to use the Staff of Fire that's listed in the Ardea section of the above-mentioned free equipment list. It's good to have equipped when you're using Fireballs in a combat, since the Fire Mage skill increases the damage that each Fireball will do.
  • 4 of 10: In order to equip the Staff of Fire or any other magic staff, you'll have to buy the Magic Staves skill. Also, get the Learn Quickly skill to get an extra learning point on every future level-up.
  • 5 of 10: Unfortunately, you can't equip a shield while holding a staff, so it'll be important to take down enemies at range due to your reduced protection. Also, you can't hold a torch and a staff at the same time, so buy the Light spell from a shrine. Cast it right before entering a dark area (like a cave) so you can equip your staff and still see what you're doing.
  • 6 of 10: To get more Ancient Knowledge points, you'll have to buy some from a trainer such as Tavin in Gotha. Your goal is 250 points, and it'll take quite a few level-ups to get enough learning points for that. Combat with roaming creatures doesn't get you XP very fast, so do all the Misc. Missions to get XP, then start on the Main Missions.
  • 7 of 10: When your Ancient Knowledge gets to 170, go get the Staff of Power that's listed in the Ardea section of the free equipment list. Equipping it gives you the Mana Regeneration skill, which you won't be able to buy from a trainer until you reach your goal of 250 Ancient Knowledge. With the staff, you'll be able to keep using magic during combats without having to drink mana potions. Unfortunately, you can't equip both it and the Staff of Fire at the same time, so your Fireballs won't hurt as much.
  • 8 of 10: When you finally get your Ancient Knowledge to 250, buy the Mana Regeneration skill. You can then equip your Staff of Fire to have both the Fire Mage and Mana Regeneration skills at the same time. You'll then be able to use Fireballs exclusively for most if not all combats.
  • 9 of 10: After that's achieved, put some learning points into getting more mana, then pump them all into Strength so you can buy the Regeneration skill. (It requires a Strength of 300.) Then get your Ancient Knowledge up to 300 and your Endurance up to 200.
  • 10 of 10: The learning points you get after that can be put wherever you want, which will probably be in life energy and mana. You'll be powerful enough that it won't really matter, so do whatever you feel like doing. (Note that after you meet Immanuel, you might want to buy the Fire Mage skill so you can have both it and a shield equipped for better protection.)
