How can I get to that same area if I don't take the shortcut?
1 of 8: Go through the "password" door and prepare to fight some Combine soldiers as you ascend the stairs and explore the floor above.
2 of 8: Move into the doorway that last soldier was shooting through to get the person manning the little bridge to lower it for you.
3 of 8: Go across it after searching the nearby rooms for supplies, then let your team kill the soldier who tries to follow you across as you look around for more supplies.
4 of 8: Move on to find more stairs to climb.
5 of 8: Past them are several areas with headcrab and zombie combats.
6 of 8: Raid the storage room for supply crates, then find the nearby door that you can open to get back to the outdoor area with the "password" door. You can go back that way if you want to look for leftover supplies.
7 of 8: The way to progress is to leave the storage room through the open doorway on its other side. Do so cautiously, since there a couple of soldiers waiting for you just outside.
