Myst V: End of Ages Hints

Do I have to play the ages in any specific order?

  • 1 of 9: At the start of the game, you will, but that's just because you'll need to solve a few puzzles before you'll have the means to travel to other ages.
  • 2 of 9: You'll start out in K'veer.  (If you need any help with any of these ages, click on the link with that age's name for a list of specific questions -- what you're reading now is intended only as a general sketch of how the game flows.)
  • 3 of 9: From there, solving the basic puzzles there will take you automatically to The Great Shaft.
  • 4 of 9: Once you've reached the Great Shaft, you should see linking books on pedestals.  You will find more of these linking books as you progress through the shaft -- solve the puzzles you'll encounter there in order to reach additional books.
  • 5 of 9: Clicking on the picture in each of the linking books will take you to a different part of Direbo.
  • 6 of 9: You will eventually need to find and use all four linking books in the Great Shaft, even if the different parts of Direbo look quite similar -- as each section of Direbo leads you to a different age.
  • 7 of 9: You don't need to solve the four ages in any particular order, and if you get stuck in one, you can return to the Shaft to find additional linking books and start working on different ages.  All that matters in the end is that you solve all four ages at some point.
  • 8 of 9: It is quite possible, for example, to solve all of the puzzles in the shaft first, then start with the "fourth" age of Laki'ahn first.  However, the order of the ages is suggested by the D'ni numbers (1-4) that appear on the linking books.  That also happens to be the order the books are located in the shaft from top to bottom, if you don't want to be bothered learning the D'ni numbering system.

Also, on a few occasions, concepts that you learn in simple examples in earlier ages (per the suggested order) will re-appear in slightly more complicated forms in later ages.  There's nothing that makes it impossible to solve the ages "out of order", but for most people, it tends to be easier to solve them "in order".
  • 9 of 9: Once you've solve all four of the main ages, all games will converge in what I've called simply the Endgame.
