Myst V: End of Ages Hints
I'm past that cable, but what else is there to do on this first island?
of 18: You may notice that there are actually several islands that you can see.
of 18: Try looking around.
of 18: And I don't just mean with your naked eyes.
of 18: When you get past the cable and go up the stairs all the way to the top of this island, you should see a manually operated telescope to your right. Click on it to use it.
of 18: You can adjust your view by sliding the levers -- the left lever controls elevation and the lower-right lever controls rotation. You can zoom in and out with the upper-left lever.
of 18: You may be able to see a few symbols written in a bright yellow on an adjacent island.
of 18: It's worth noting those symbols for later, but that's not the only thing you'll be able to see.
of 18: At least not if you have a good view.
of 18: If you can't see anything else besides the symbols, look to see what might be obstructing your view within the range that the telescope is able to point at.
of 18: In particular, look towards the left of its range.
of 18: There seems to be a gear in the way.
of 18: That gear isn't solid -- it has spokes and then spaces in between.
of 18: If you could turn the gear, you might be able to look through the empty spaces to see what's on the other side.
of 18: If you haven't moved the gear at all, moving it once or twice to the "right" (based on the position of the switch, as described in the question above) is enough to rotate the gear so that you can look through it. But you may need to move it a couple of more times if it's still blocking your way when you look through it -- as it's possible to rotate the gear so many times that you make an opening only to block it again. Moving it again in either direction should rotate it back in position.
of 18: Then, look through the telescope again in the direction of the gear -- about 2/3rds of the way to the left and about midway vertically -- and you should be able to see all the way across to another island.
of 18: If you look in the right position, you should see a pedestal in the distance with a symbol drawn on it.
of 18: You've probably already figured out what these pedestals do on Tahgira. (If you haven't, that's okay, but you may want to read these general hints on pedestals for a quick recap of some of the clues you may have missed, as an answer follows in the next hint.)
of 18: Draw the symbol on your slate, drop it, walk away, and the Bahro will take the slate to that new pedestal. Return to the main pedestal back at the start of this age, where you can click on the symbol you just drew and teleport yourself onto the second island.
