Nancy Drew 21: Warnings at Waverly Academy Hints

What do I do with the furnace?

  • 1 of 12: You can't do anything with it until the very end of the game.
  • 2 of 12: When you follow the note down to the cellar (through the driving snow, brrrrrr) and walk up to the furnace, Nancy will notice some odd sounds coming from behind it. Look for a folded piece of paper on a pipe on the right side of the furnace.
  • 3 of 12: The paper is a blueprint of the cellar, but as Nancy notes, it's not the same as the blueprint she picked up from the cubbyhole behind the star-shaped bricks.
  • 4 of 12: It's clear that this furnace conceals the entrance to a secret room -- and given that page 6 of Rita's journal refers to it, her secret has to be in that room. So how do we get into it?
  • 5 of 12: Rita says, "Behind the Dupin grate, the black wood's chant shall some day reveal what history deemed lost." Doesn't that sound like the Blackwood Society?
  • 6 of 12: In fact, the chant of the Blackwood Society is the key here. Take another look at it and see what you can figure out.
  • 7 of 12: The chant is a series of numbers; the blueprint you just found on the furnace has numbers on the levers. It's not too great a leap to assume there's a connection here.
  • 8 of 12: What you want to do is pull the levers in the order indicated by the chant. That is --
  • 9 of 12: -- levers 3, 5, 19, 4, 7, and 2, in that order. This is made a little more difficult by the fact that the blueprint shows the furnace from above, and Nancy is looking at its front.
  • 10 of 12: Remember the orthographic views you did for Corine? This is the same principle.
  • 11 of 12: That is, the blueprint shows the levers numbered from the left. In order to tell which levers you want, you need to make sure you count them as they would look from above.
  • 12 of 12: Still confused? Here's a chart to show you which levers to pull and in which order. (Naturally, this won't work until you've found the blueprint on the furnace, so don't bother trying until then.)
