How do I add the numbers?

  • 1 of 4: To start, you will need to correctly identify the numbers on each of the two pillars. The chart on the back of the Mayan map can help with the conversion.
  • 2 of 4: Starting with one of the pillars, apply what you know, step by step to arrive at the value of the number.  You know that dots are worth one; lines are worth five; and that when numbers are "carried" it is done in increments of twenty.  The bottom number on the pillar is the "ones," the middle number is the "twenties," and the number on top is the "four-hundreds".  Since the left pillar is a bit simpler, it is recommended that you begin there.
  • 3 of 4: Once you have a value for each pillar, it is simple to add them together.
  • 4 of 4: 1252 + 752 = 2004.  Now all that's left is to convert this number back into the Mayan symbols.
