The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles Hints
Through the Fringe of Madness
of 19: This quest starts soon after the wall-to-butterfly transformation at the end of the previous quest.
of 19: Follow the path that leads away from the weird room, harvesting plants and killing grummites as you go.
of 19: Keep following the path along until you reach the Passwall settlement, which is at the north end of the Fringe.
of 19: To reach the two Gates of Madness, follow the short path that leads off east from Passwall's north end.
of 19: As you approach the gates, you'll see a huge giant called the Gatekeeper fighting a party of adventurers. Stand back and watch, as you don't want to get caught up in this fight.
of 19: The giant will easily finish off all of the adventurers except for their captain, who usually manages to run away.
of 19: After you get a journal entry, return to Passwall and ask around to see if anyone has any advice on thrashing the Gatekeeper and getting his keys.
of 19: Keep talking to people about the Gatekeeper until you get referred to two people who can help.
of 19: Once you've done both of the above sub-quests, equip your best bow and the Gatekeeper Bone Arrows, then use one of the Relmyna's Tears poisons on your bow. (If you don't have a bow, buy one from Dredhwen.)
of 19: Lead Jayred up to the Gatekeeper's area, then summon a creature if you have a Conjuration spell that'll do that.
of 19: Shoot the Gatekeeper with an arrow, being careful not to miss him and waste the poison, then stay back from him and keep shooting arrows at him.
of 19: You probably won't need to poison your bow again unless it takes you a very long time to kill the Gatekeeper (which it might if you're on the highest difficulty setting).
of 19: After the giant dies and you get a journal entry, raid his body to get his keys and another journal entry.
of 19: After talking to Haskill, you can go through either one of the gates at the ends of the dark corridors north of the Gatekeeper's area.
of 19: When you arrive at New Sheoth, you should run around both the Bliss and Crucible districts to get the local map revealed and to find entrances to the palace in both areas.
of 19: In the Palace Grounds area, head east and up some stairs to find two doors that lead into the palace building.
of 19: Inside, find Sheogorath on his throne and talk to him to get the Charity of Madness amulet and finish this quest.
