The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Hints
The Scent of Incense
of 9: Go along the lower boardwalk that's just north of Flotsam until you find a guy named Vencel Pugg leaning against a wall.
of 9: Talk to him to get this quest, then go to Vilmos Bartok's corner shop east of the inn.
of 9: NOTE: There are four people standing near the entrance to the shop. If you talk to Matilda Szabo, you'll get the "Little Shop of Dreams" side quest. You can finish this quest either with or without doing that one.
of 9: Talk to Bartok and tell him you need a certain formula. You can then either agree to accept a fake formula, or try to intimidate him into giving you the real one. (Note that getting him to close his shop for Matilda Szabo's quest will get you the real formula.)
of 9: If you give Pugg a fake formula, he'll eventually realize it, and will attack you instead of rewarding you. You may want to quicksave before talking to Bartok and keep trying to intimidate the real formula out of him until you succeed.
of 9: Either way, return to Pugg and give him whichever formula you got.
of 9: Leave Flotsam through its SE gate, then go a short way SE to find Pugg next to the base of a giant tree.
of 9: When you talk to him, he'll insist on blindfolding you. If you agree, you'll be taken to his secret lab in a cut-scene. If not, you'll have to get there on your own.
