Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake Hints

How do I solve Mickey Malone's diabolical puzzle?

  • 1 of 10: Examine this puzzle carefully.  What do you see?
  • 2 of 10: You see eight rotating dials, in four groups of two each.  Each group of two dials is decorated with a different color (green, red, blue, and yellow) and with a medallion (an image in a circle).  Each dial displays a numeral, one at a time.  Touching a rotating dial causes it, and usually other, rotating dials to advance once, each displaying a different numeral.  Each of the two numerals in each group is probably a two-digit number.
  • 3 of 10: You need to know more about what the rotating dials are capable of displaying.
  • 4 of 10: It might help to work this puzzle out on paper.  Write down the numerals that can be displayed by each rotating dial, in the order that they appear around the dial.  You should also record which other dials rotate when you rotate each dial.  (This puzzle is different for Junior Detectives than for Senior Detectives, so the hints are split in that way.)
  • 5 of 10: Examine the top diagram carefully, circling the numerals you start with and the numerals you wish to end with, and determine the number of times each dial needs to rotate in order to reach that number.
  • 6 of 10: Examine the bottom diagram carefully and look at the rows, noting which dials affect the most numerals and which dials affect the least numerals.  You may want to start by rotating the dial that affect the most numerals, and then work towards rotating the dial that affects the least numerals.  That way you don't finish by rotating a dial that messes all the other dials up.
  • 7 of 10: Examine the bottom diagram carefully again and look at the columns, noting which numerals are affected by the fewest dials and which numerals are affected by the most dials.  You may want to start by rotating the dial that is not affected by any other dial, and then work towards rotating the dial affected only by dials you have already set.  Again, that way you minimize rotating a dial that messes other dials up.
  • 8 of 10: The key to solving this is to determine the correct order to set the dials.
  • 9 of 10: Before you get stated, you must have a goal in mind.  You must determine exactly what the numerals should be set to on the dials.
  • 10 of 10: Now, solve the puzzle through logic, reason, and determination.
