Dragon Age: Origins Hints

What's the best order to do things in?

  • 1 of 11: You'll get the main quest for each of the four treaty quest sets after you finish the Ostagar quests. You can do those four quest sets in any order after you finish the non-optional quests in the Lothering and Party Camp section.
  • 2 of 11: The first thing to do is go through Bodahn Feddic's inventory and make note of special things that you'll want to eventually buy so you can start saving up for them. (Note that you'll have until early in Part 5 to get everything you want.)
  • 3 of 11: Next, do the Premium Content quests for any modules you have installed. "The Stone Prisoner" is especially good to do right away since it'll get you a powerful golem follower.
  • 4 of 11: After that, travel back and forth between all of the available world map locations to get as many Random Encounters as you can. You won't be eligible for most of the quest-related encounters yet, but you should be able to get all of the non-quest ones.
  • 5 of 11: Then it's time to do as much as you can from the Optional Quest Sets, along with exploring and looting all the various areas you can travel to.
  • 6 of 11: Just because an area has treaty quests associated with it doesn't mean you have to finish (or even do anything on) those quests the first time you travel there.
  • 7 of 11: Denerim won't be a major main-quest area until Part 4 of the game, so feel free to visit it at any time for optional quests and random encounters. See below for detailed info on the first two areas in Denerim that you can visit, plus its random encounters.
  • 8 of 11: IMPORTANT NOTE: Lothering will be completely destroyed by darkspawn after you finish your first treaty quest. That makes it extra important to do everything you want to there before finishing any treaty quests.
  • 9 of 11: After you're through with all of the above things and are ready to get serious about doing the treaty quests, you still don't have to actually commit to finishing any of them right away. Most of them allow you to do some of their quests, then quit for awhile and go do other things.
  • 10 of 11: Since the last few combats in any treaty quest line are by far the hardest, it can be beneficial to do all four quest series up to the point right before you have to commit to finishing them before you actually do finish any. That way, your characters will be as tough and high-level as possible for all the end-quest combats.
  • 11 of 11: NOTE: One exception to that strategy is if you want to get Wynne as a follower as soon as possible so that you'll have a powerful healer with you for the other treaty quests. The only way to do that is to finish the mage treaty quests first. Just remember that you'll be lower-level and with less-powerful gear, making the combats harder. You may prefer to put off the mage treaty quests and give Morrigan the Spirit Healer specialization so she can be your healer. (The Group Heal spell is all that's needed at first, plus maybe Revival and the Creation spell Heal.)
