The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Hints
Character Creation Tips
of 10: After you type in your name and follow the guard to the ship's exit hatch, walk off the ship and approach the guard on the dock to get the race selection screen.
of 10: After you choose a race, follow the guard to the door to the Census and Excise Office. Go inside and approach Socucius Ergalla to choose your class and birthsign.
of 10: Actually, it doesn't really matter what race and class you choose -- every possible character starts the game with every skill at some level, and there aren't any race- or class-related restrictions on how high each skill can eventually go. In other words, characters aren't restricted to a narrow path of development based on how you create them (like they are in most RPGs), and every character can eventually become a super-powerful fighter / mage / thief. (In fact, they can do so fairly quickly if my best Character Development Tips are used.)
of 10: With that said, I do have some specific recommendations for your character's race and class (and birthsign) if you're wanting to be sure to create a character who can handle early-game challenges without using a special development strategy.
of 10: Once you've done all that and verified everything, your Release Identification paper will appear on the nearby table. Pick up the paper with the Activate key to read it, and then take it by clicking on the "Take" button at its top left corner.
of 10: Once you have your release paper, go through the door next to Ganciele Douar and explore the rest of this small building. The exit to the outside is in the first side room you come across.
of 10: You could loot the two rooms full of goodies now, but it'd be easier to wait to do that until later. You'll see why soon. (One thing you might want to do now is grab the lockpick and pick open the chest on the table next to Ergalla to get some extra gold. Neither the lockpick nor the gold will be taken when you're caught, so there's no need to drop them.)
of 10: Go outside and search the barrel to find a special ring plus a random item or two, then go through the next door to get to Sellus Gravius' office.
of 10: Now you're going to have to start using the Activate key to talk to people. Talk to Gravius about all the topics he gives you, especially "Morrowind" and then "duties" to get the first of the game's Main Quests.
of 10: When you're through talking to him, you can exit to the outside to finish the character generation sequence and really start the game. (You'll be in the Seyda Neen region, so see its hint section for further information.) However, you might first want to steal the key to the Census and Excise warehouse so you can raid it without having to mess with lockpicking its door.
