How do I solve the ring puzzle?
of 14: At long last, it is time to discover the purpose of the spiked rings that Gus has been finding on all of the victims' bodies.
of 14: It appears that what is required is to place all six rings into the six squares that show various ring and spike configurations.
of 14: Make sure that you have all six rings before you begin the ring puzzle. Otherwise, the puzzle will not be solvable, and each time you back away from it, the puzzle will reset.
of 14: Once you have all six rings, the first step in solving the puzzle is to place each ring in its appropriate square.
of 14: Note the markings within the squares. They do not match any of the rings. In fact, each of the rings has four -- and only four -- spikes, while the markings show rings with many more spikes.
of 14: The purpose of the markings is to show where a ring *might be placed*. In other words, you cannot place a ring in a square, and in such a position, that its four spikes would NOT match four of the spikes in that particular marking.
of 14: The object, then, is first to determine which ring goes where; and then to select each ring, and rotate it to the proper orientation, so that it fits within the correct square properly.
of 14: Placing all six rings correctly, it turns out, is only half the puzzle! Doing so has merely enabled the remainder of the puzzle.
of 14: Now, the next step -- and the ultimate goal of the ring puzzle -- is to move the three squares that make up the image of the key (at the bottom of the ring puzzle) up to the top right, where there is a "receptacle" that is just made to receive that key.
of 14: Before doing this, it is a good idea to save the game, as this part of the puzzle cannot be reset. You may wish to be able to return to an "original position", as you work on the puzzle. And restoring a game save is the only way to do that.
of 14: To finish solving the ring puzzle, you will need to slide the horizontal and vertical rows of squares (the ones containing the six rings, as well as the ones containing the three pieces of the key) back and forth, up and down.
of 14: To slide any group of three, "grab" the half-circle shape at the end of the row or column that you want to pull, and click on it. That row (or column) of three squares will move in the direction toward where you clicked.
of 14: By moving rows and columns of rings and key pieces, you must move the three key pieces to the top row of three, and in the proper order so that they re-form the complete key.
of 14: Once all three key pieces have been placed at the very top of the puzzle -- and in the correct order -- they can be "pushed" into the locking mechanism for the door (using the "C"-shaped handle at the left side of the top row). This will open the door, and move into a lengthy cut-scene that will end Chapter 6, and move into Chapter 7.
